This tutorial will discuss certain semantic aspects of the non truth-conditional approach to slurs and related phenomena. The tutorial will begin with the presentation of a framework for non truth-conditional meaning, and highlight some of its logical repercussions. It will then focus on the particular case of slurs, and it will consider some alternative options available from the viewpoint of the non truth-conditional paradigm. We conclude with a brief session on an apparently classic source of the non truth-conditional approach, Frege's discussion of tone and neighbouring phenomena.
